Is there such a thing? As for giving up poetry, I plead innocent; this is "light verse," which means it should not be taken seriously by anyone but myself.
Bi-Cycle
I drink too much. It’s sad. It’s so plebeian.
Whiskey straight and ice, though sometimes wine.
I drink until my faults—well, I don’t see ‘um.
I think that’s why most drink. “It is divine
To forgive,” so the caveat goes.
But caveats don’t comfort—they’re abstractions.
They will not numb my head down to my toes.
I’m want to lose, not gain any more traction!
The rabble-rousing voices in my head
Rarely shut off when I am being still.
A little booze, the radio goes dead;
A little booze, I step off the treadmill.
Although my doctor says my habit’s risky
Considering all the medicines I take
There are worse ways to cope than a lot of whiskey—
I mean a lot. I’ve got a thirst to slake!
Oh happy alcoholic! Or so I think.
My mind’s at ease, I’m never in denial
Until the morning and the morning’s trial
When weaving towards the bath I swear off drink.

CE,
ReplyDeleteI know you placed a disclaimer at the top of the poem, and I don't wish to be preaching to anybody, but meditation is as good as medication. Time's also a good healer except when it is going forwards.

Coral
I'm sorry I might have missed the pertinent post, but why did you swear off poetry in the first place?
ReplyDeleteOh, I answered that in a note to Norm Ball here. I think. I'll go look for it. Basically I was burned out and disgusted with the state of poetry in general and my own as well.
ReplyDeleteHere's the link, Wallah-Wallah: ;-)

CE,
ReplyDeleteWhere is your link at Alsops? I do not see that one, either.

CE,
ReplyDeleteRead your latest prose-poem at Alsop, which could been written by anybody, as it's not your usual style. I thought you hated prose-poems? I don't think it even qualifies as a poem. The great visuals and observations were the only clues that you behind the pen.

Experimental. What boards are for. If I just post polished pieces, it's like I'm looking for snipers.
ReplyDeleteCE,
ReplyDeleteOK, Whatever floats your boat. Boards are boring places. Too many 'teachers'. I usually use the polystyrene type.

I too like drinking. F**k it. It's worse than heroin for withdrawal (you can die from alcohol withdrawal), it makes you say things you wouldn't normally say (see beginning of film Kelly's Heroes) and it can leave you with a really bad headache. Just drink sensibly, for you, most alcoholics I know drink more sensibly than your average man at the pub because they know they are taking a drug and act accordingly. It's not a glamorous lifestyle but who cares? Really. Be happy release the tension and go with the flow.....there are billions of teetotallers on the planet doing nothing for the world...
